Environmental Land Assessment Services

Argentum Fox Ltd is owned and operated by Tom Parker. Tom has worked since 1990 as both a technical expert and manager.

After graduating in Geological Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1990, Tom worked for three years off-shore as a wireline engineer in the North Sea and onshore in Russia, Canada, and Europe. This provided practical experience of the oil and gas industry.

After taking a year to gain a Masters in Hydrogeology (distinction), Tom split his time for three years between investigating contaminated soil and groundwater at Canadian gas plants (based in Calgary), drilling water wells in Yemen and helping to start the UK branch of an environmental consultancy called Komex.

In 1997 a permanent move to Bristol lead to focus on investigation and remediation of contamination in and adjacent to petrochemical refineries, gasworks and brownfield sites including landfills. Developing Environmental Impact Assessments for an oilfield in Ukraine and a potential Arena site in Bristol were projects that interspersed with groundwater risk assessments at nuclear facilities, and cost-benefit analyses of remediation. Assessing vapour migration in the subsurface for a UK chemical manufacturer lead to R&D projects for the Environment Agency investigating trace components of landfill gas. This included Regulatory Impact Assessment of implementing stricter guidance at UK landfills. During this time Tom was integrally involved in developing and managing the UK and European business into an operation with 60 staff and 5 offices and was Director, Europe.

In 2006 Komex was sold and Tom joined C&P Environmental. For 8 years Tom has split his time between two main subject areas: 1) supporting a number of landfill clients. Highlight projects include authoring Industry Codes of Practice on 'Management and Prevention of Sub-Surface fires', 'Perimeter soil gas emissions criteria and associated management', and writing the draft monitoring protocol for active biofilters at closed landfills (Tom has designed the first three UK active biofilters); and, 2) project managing remediation of gasworks and associated residential properties, and providing technical and strategic support for National Grid, and supporting other brownfield redevelopers.

Tom has provided expert witness advice for three brownfield land redevelopment cases and sat on CIRIA project RP961 'Asbestos in soil and made ground: A Guide to Understanding and Managing Risks' steering board. He has published nineteen conference papers, most recently:

In 2014 Tom decided to develop his own consultancy, Argentum Fox Ltd, and would be pleased to discuss your requirements with you. A full CV is also available on request.
